Chronology of African American History Ref E 185 .H64 Timeline of brief entries from 1492 to the late twentieth century.

A Critical Dictionary of the French Revolution Ref DC 148 .D5313 1989 Entries are thematic and divided into five major areas. These include events, actors, institutions and creations, ideas, and historians and commentators. A list of further readings and a list of related topics is included after each entry.

Dictionary of American Diplomatic History Ref E 183.7 .F5 1989 Contains 1,200 entries which provide basic information about significant people and events associated with U.S. foreign policy from the Revolution through 1988. A brief bibliographic list is included after each entry.

Dictionary of the Middle Ages Ref D 114 .D5 Thirteen volumes covering the period from A.D. 500-1500 in the Latin West, the Slavic World, Asia Minor, the lands of the caliphate in the East, and the Muslim-Christian area of North Africa

Historical Dictionary of the Korean War Ref DS 918 .H536 1991 This dictionary focuses on "diplomatic and political developments with a secondary emphasis on military affairs." It covers significant people, controversies, military operations, and policy pronouncements. Statistical information and a chronology are included in the appendix.

Historical Dictionary of the Spanish Empire 1402-1975 Ref DP 56 .H57 1992 Entries focus on "people, institutions, and colonies of the Spanish empire from Castile's expansion to the Canary Islands in 1402 to the surrender of Spanish Sahara in 1975." A chronology and selected bibliography are included.

The Hutchinson Dictionary of World History Ref D 9 .H87 1993 Provides coverage of global events from the earliest time period to the present. Entries are "based on 3 main divisions of history -- period, nation, and topic. Major civilizations, events, and leaders, as well as the world's nations have been included."

Encyclopedias


American Decades Ref E 169.12 .A419 Part chronology and part encyclopedia, this set devotes one volume to each decade beginning with 1900-1909. Every volume includes is divided into thirteen chapters dealing with broad topics such as the Arts, Fashion, and Government. Each chapter, in turn, is organized into a chronology of world events affecting that topic, major stories in the press, people in the news, deaths, and important publications.

The American Revolution, 1775-1783: An Encyclopedia Ref E 208 .A433 1993 This encyclopedia covers the time period from April 1775 to August 1782. Entries focus on battles, significant people, and political and diplomatic themes. A chronology and glossary are included.

Encyclopedia of African-American Civil Rights: From Emancipation to the Present Ref E 185.61 .E54 Provides over 800 entries on the most significant people, organizations, events, and court cases of the civil rights movement. A brief bibliographic list is included after each entry.

Encyclopedia of American History REF E 174 .E53 2003 Eleven volumes providing a broad overview of significant individuals, events, and topics from the 15th century onward. Entries are signed with bibliographies.

Encyclopedia of the Confederacy Ref E 487 .E55 1993 This encyclopedia is designed to answer questions about the South from 1861 to 1865. Entries cover a broad range of topics including campaigns and battles, important men and women, as well as the Confederacy's government, economic system, and foreign affairs. Key documents of Confederate history are included in the appendix.

Encyclopedia of Eastern Europe Ref DJK 6 .E53 2000 Covers people, places, and events from the Congress of Vienna to the fall of Communism.

Encyclopedia of the Holocaust Ref D 804.3 .E53 1990 This encyclopedia is designed to give an overall view of the Jewish holocaust during World War II. One thousand entries are included, many with photographs and maps. A detailed chronology and index are provided.

Encyclopedia of Latin American History and Culture REF F 1406 .E53 1996 Combined efforts of 832 scholars from twenty countries treating nations, regions, people, places, and events. Signed articles with bibliographies.

Encyclopedia of the North American Colonies Ref E 45 .E53 1993 This encyclopedia traces the colonial history of what became the U.S. and Canada. Entries are either topical or thematic and "offer thorough coverage of each topic and underscore its significance in the overall development of the economy, society, and culture of colonial North America."

Encyclopedia of the Renaissance Ref CB 361 .E52 Covers the period from 1350 through the mid 17th century as a cultural movement as well as an historical epoch. Signed articles with cross references and brief bibliographies.

Encyclopedia of the Stateless Nations Ref D 860 .M56 2002 The United Nations estimates that only 3% of the world’s 6,000 national groups have achieved statehood. The remainder are discussed in this resource arranged alphabetically from Abaza to Zulians.

Encyclopedia of the Vietnam War Ref DS 557.7 .E53 1998 Focuses on the thirty years between 1945 and 1975. Entries cover "significant people, legislation, military operations, and controversies important to the American participation in the Vietnam War." A selected bibliography and maps of Vietnam are provided in the appendix.

The Modern Encyclopedia of Russian and Soviet History Ref DK 14 .M6 Entries cover all major facts, events, people, and institutions important to the history of Russia and the Soviet Union. Brief bibliographies are included after most entries.

Oxford Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt Ref DT 58 .O94 2001 Covers prehistoric, predynastic, and dynastic phases of civilization in the Nile Valley.

Biography


American National Biography Ref CT 213 .A68 1999 Essentially an expansion of the 22 volume Dictionary of American Biography, covering the same period from earliest Colonial times up to the mid twentieth century, but with less emphasis on major figures. Instead the emphasis is on more “ordinary” people and member of racial minorities or ethnic groups previously neglected by scholars.

Dictionary of American Biography. Ref E 176 .D56 Scholarly essays on people who have lived in the United States and who have made a contribution to American life. Signed articles include bibliographies. A separate index gives subject, contributor, birthplace, topic and occupation entry to the basic set, volumes 1-20. Supplements bring the set up to date; name index at the back of the most recent supplement is a cumulative guide to them all.

Dictionary of National Biography. Ref DA 28 .D47 British model on which the Dictionary of American Biography is based. Contains scholarly signed articles, which include bibliographies. Basic set covers people who died before 1901; supplements bring the set up to date. Cumulative index from 1901 provided at the end of the most recent supplement.

Historic World Leaders Ref CT 103 .H57 Biographical sketches of 620 figures not typically covered reflecting a multicultural balance.

Notable American Women 1607-1950. Ref CT 3260 .N57 Scholarly essays with bibliographies. Covers 1,350 women, most of whom are not included in the Dictionary of American Biography.

Reference Library of American Women Ref CT 3260 .R44 Functions as a continuation of Notable American Women 1607-1950, providing coverage of women overlooked by the earlier work and those too recent to have been included.

Statistics


European Historical Statistics Ref HA 1107 .M5 1975 Covers climate, population and vital statistics, labor force, agriculture, industry, external trade, transportation and communications, finance, prices, education, and national accounts.

Historical Statistics of the United States, Colonial Times to 1970 Ref HA 202 .B87 Summarizes vital statistics and data on economics and cultural life in the United States.

Statistical Record of Native North America Ref E 98 .P76 .S73 Useful and seldom seen data; although the emphasis is on the last hundred years, some tables date back to the late 15th century. Earlier statistics may be based in part on subjective impressions or anecdotal evidence.

Soviet Statistics Since 1950 Ref HA 1444 .P63 1991 Covers population and labor, industry, energy, agriculture, and foreign trade.

Bibliographies


With certain exceptions, print bibliographies have largely been displaced by electronic counterparts available through Web sites such as those listed under Internet Resources.

American Historical Association's Guide To Historical Literature Ref D 20 .A55 Third edition of classic guide divided geographically and chronologically.

American Diaries Ref Z 5305 .U5 .A74 Two-volume set providing access by place, name, and subject to significant diaries kept between 1492 and 1980. Citations are given to publications (often too old or esoteric to be available online) in which the diaries have been reprinted.

AMDOCS: Documents for the Study of American History. One of the most comprehensive bibliographies of electronic primary documents with best coverage for the period between Colonial times and the end of the 1800’s.

America and Russia: Meeting of Frontiers. Examines America’s exploration and settlement of the West and Russia’s experience in Siberia and Alaska. Russia and the United States were very different countries but the histories of their frontiers have many parallels, both in the freedom and opportunity that they offered and in the conflict and hardship they produced--for settlers and for native peoples.

American Memory: Historical Collections for the National Digital Library. Primary source and archival materials taken from the Library of Congress special collections. Includes manuscripts and broadsides, books, pamphlets, photographs, motion pictures, and sound recordings

American Women's History: A Research Guide. Provides citations to print and Internet reference sources, as well as to selected large primary source collections.

Advanced Papyrological Information System Access to Greek and Roman documents in collections worldwide.

The Avalon Project at Yale Law School. Reproduces documents relevant to law, diplomacy, politics, and history ranging in time from the Code of Hammurabi to the Hama Covenant of 1988. Includes papers of the Confederate States of America, the Hague Conventions on the Laws of War, and the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials.

Center for Learning & Performance Technologies A resource designed to assist those who wish to discover and develop tools and strategies for e-learning projects.

Chief George Manual Memorial Library and Fourth World Documentation Archive. “Fourth World” is defined as those “nations forcefully incorporated into states which maintain a distinct political culture but are internationally unrecognized.” Includes indigenous peoples of every continent.

CWIHP: Cold War International History Project'. This project supports the release of historical materials by governments on all sides of the Cold War, and seeks to disseminate new information and perspectives on Cold War history.

Documenting the American South'. Contains digitized versions of works held in three major collections: First Person Narratives of the American south, 1860-1920; North American Slave Narratives, Beginnings to 1920; and the Library of Southern Literature, Beginnings to 1920.

Early Modern Women Database. Covers a period from 1500 to 1800 with full-text resources along with images and sound recordings.

Edwin Moise Bibliography of the Vietnam War. Large annotated bibliography with minimalistic web design. Mostly covers books, microfilmed document collections, and government documents.

EuroDocs:Primary Historical Documents from Western Europe. Provides two larger groups of text covering Medieval and Renaissance studies and Europe as a Supernational Region along with sections for individual countries including the Vatican.

Exploring Ancient World Cultures. Includes essays on hundreds of topics of varying length as well as a large section of primary texts and translations.

The First American West: The Ohio River Valley, 1750-1820. Contains over 15,000 pages of material including books, pamphlets, newspapers, legal papers, ledgers, broadsides, images, maps, letters, and artifacts covering the history, economy, and social life of the early trans-Appalachian West.

Freedom of Information Act Electronic Reading Room--FBI. This site contains scanned documents from famous FBI cases and files such as the Lindbergh Kidnapping and the Marilyn Monroe file.

Freedom of Information Act Electronic Reading Room--State Department. The site contains a collection of 13,000 declassified documents frequently requested under FOIA. Examples of topics include records relating to the creation of the CIA, human rights abuses in Chile, and Amelia Earhart.

Genocide Studies Program. This Site provides a wealth of full-text articles, maps and databases that chronicle and interpret some of the darkest chapters of human history.

Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition. Maintained by Yale University and includes over 200 primary documents on such diverse subjects as the Dred Scott Decision, the 1863 New York City draft riots, and the film Birth of a Nation.

Historical Text Archive. Links are organized in three broad categories: Geographical (Africa-United States), Topical (African-American, War, Women), and Resources (Archives, Departments, Journals).

HLAS Online: Handbook of Latin American Studies. Online version of the Handbook of Latin American Studies published annually by the Library of Congress since 1935.


The Labyrinth: Resources for Medieval Studies. Hosted by Georgetown University with materials appropriate for all levels of study.

Life after the Holocaust The US Holocaust Memorial Museum's online exhibit of audio accounts of survivor interviews.

Making of America. A digital library of primary sources in US social history with 8,500 books and 50,000 journal articles printed in the nineteenth century.

Map Collections--American Memory, Library of Congress

Middle East North Africa Internet Resource Guide. Electronic bibliography that covers from Mauritania to Pakistan and all the countries in between.

NARA: National Archives and Records Administration. Searchable database with 83,000 digital copies of selected documents, maps, images, and sound recordings. Includes descriptions of more than 300,000 additional records with instructions for ordering copies.

The National Atlas of the United States Presidential election maps that detail results from 1789 to 2000.

NativeWeb. Originally founded to cover North America, the focus has expanded to include Africa, Europe, Russia, New Zealand, and Australia.

NetSERF: The Connection to Medieval Resources. Encyclopedic site with over 1,700 links to other sites, many with text and translations of primary documents. Arranged by broad subjects with subdivisions. For example, “Law” is broken down into Barbarian, Canon, English Common, Irish, Roman, and Spanish.

The Nizkor (Holocaust) Project. Based on a Hebrew word meaning “we will remember,” this site provides links to other Holocaust sites as well as full text documents and photographs.

Internet Resources O-Z

Okeanos Resources related to the ancient Mediterranean world and Near East.

ORB: The Online Reference Book for Medieval Studies. Collection of peer-reviewed essays and articles as well as links to some primary medieval sources.

The English Short Title Catalog "provides bibliographic records for all surviving letter press material in the British Isles and North America before 1801, held by the British Library and over 2000 other institutions worldwide."

University of Pennsylvania African Studies Center. Offers links to direct news sources in Africa, a multimedia library, and relevant U.S. government documents.

The Victorian Web. A virtual encyclopedia of 19th century Britain with essays on topics as diverse as phrenology, Freud, and the Crimean War. Primary sources range from periodicals such as Punch and Cornhill Magazine to parliamentary studies on factory conditions.

The Wars for Vietnam: 1945-1975. Offers valuable and often difficult to obtain primary documents such as the Geneva Accords closing the French Indochina War, President Eisenhower’s 1954 letter of support to Ngo Dinh Diem, an McGeorge Bundy’s 1965 memo to President Johnson seeking sustained reprisals against Hanoi.

Women and Social Movements in the U.S., 1775-2000. Arranged by topics (called projects) each defined by a question followed by 15-20 primary documents to provide an answer. Projects include freedmen’s aid, the WCTU, Chicago World’s Fair, and labor strikes.

WWW Virtual Library: American Indians. One of the most comprehensive sites covering this subject. The home page lists 31 subject categories including academic subject (culture, history, archeology); indigenous peoples’ contributions (activist sites, museums, indigenous knowledge); and source materials (books, music, videos, art).

WWW Virtual Library: Asian Studies. Selective meta site with links to scholarly documents, resources, and information concerned with Asian studies.

WWW Virtual Library: History Central Catalogue. Meta site with subdivisions by nation-state, eras and epochs (Ancient Greece, Medieval Britain), and historical topics (Labor History, History of Medicine)..

WWW Virtual Library: Indigenous Studies. Large collection of links to sites by and about indigenous nations around the world. Listing of general resources such as the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) is followed by links listed by geographic region and indigenous nation.
