Art & Architecture Thesaurus Online Contains more than 125,000 terms covering "find art, archictecture, decorative arts, archival materials, and material culture."

Dictionary of Art. Ref N31 .D5. Also online as Grove Dictionary of Art. Articles by experts in the field, illustrated, with bibliographies. The index is in vol.34.

Dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other related online reference books at Xreferplus.

Encyclopedia of World Art. Ref N 31 .E533 Comprehensive, excellent articles. Good bibliographies for further information. Excellent illustrations at the end of each volume. Separate index volume.

Encyclopedia of Visual Art. Ref N25 .E53 1989 Well-illustrated coverage of art history, art works and styles. Several volumes of biographies. Index in last volume.

McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Art. Ref N33 .M23 Many short articles. Well-illustrated. Art is covered comprehensively.

Oxford Dictionary of Art. Ref N 33 .O93 Short entries. OK for quick reference on fine arts.

Praeger Encyclopedia of Art. Ref N33 .P68 Longer articles than in the McGraw-Hill set. Good illustrations. Good index.

Fine Arts. / Ehresmann. Z 5931 .E47 Gives reference books and history books by period and region. Annotations give user aids and evaluations.

Art Books. / Lucas. Z 5931 .L92 A selective bibliography. Lists by author and artists' names. Topics in very broad historical area.

Print Indexes to Periodicals

Click here to see online indexes.

Periodicals are shelved on the second floor in alphabetical order by title. Some periodicals are received on microfilm; these are stored on the main floor. Check the periodicals holdings list to determine library holdings.

Although the indexes listed below are now available online, it is still necessary to consult printed indexes for the earlier years that are not covered by the online index.

Art Index. Ref Z 5937 .A78 Indexes about 150 journals of U.S. and Europe. Entries are by author, artist, and subject; they cover monographs, books, bulletins, documents, etc., on subjects concerned with art in the broad sense (fine and applied arts, archeology, etc.). This is the most important index for art-related topics.

Humanities Index. Ref AI 3 .H85 Covers the humanities, including archaeology, folklore, history, language, and literature, philosophy, religion and theology.

Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature. Ref AI 3 .R28 Covers general-interest periodicals and provides references for a wide variety of topics including news, current affairs, politics, popular theater, and film.

Craft and Design


Britannica Encyclopedia of American Art. Ref N 6505 .B73 Covers art in the general sense (includes architecture and photography, for instance) and artists. Well-illustrated. U.S. only.

Oxford Companion to the Decorative Arts. Ref NK 30 .O93 Deals with art which serves a practical purpose. Very few illustrations. Worldwide coverage.

Studio Dictionary of Design & Decoration. Ref NK 1165.S78 Covers crafts, design, decoration. Lists terms, objects, craftsmen, artists, types, etc. Many illustrations.

Encyclopedia of Architecture. Ref NA 31 E59 Many illustrations on many topics related to architecture. Charts, lists of performance properties for construction materials, for instance.

Dictionary of Architecture and Construction. / Harris. Ref NA 31 .H32 Does not list persons, but many terms, styles, etc. Illustrated.

Biography


Who's Who in American Art. Ref N 6536 .W5 Lists about 9,000 people (not architects, photographers, or decorators) who are living. They include museum staff, cartoonists, commercial artists, critics, etc. In the back there is a listing of categories of specific professions, also a geographic index.

Dictionary of American Painters, Sculptors, Engravers. / Fielding Ref N 6536 .F5 Very brief entries. U.S. only.

Contemporary Architects. Ref NA 680. C625 Includes lists of works done by the artist and about the artist. Well-illustrated.

Dictionnaire critique et documentaire des peintres, sculpteurs, dessinateurs et graveurs... / Benezit. 8 volumes. Ref N 40 .B47 About 100,000 artists are listed (not architects) of all countries since the 5th century B.C. Artists known by initials only are listed after each letter entry. It is the largest work of its kind. In French.

Biography and Genealogy Master Index. Provides index entries to over hundreds of biographical dictionaries, encyclopedias, and directories.

Sculpture Index. / Clapp. Ref NB 36 .C55 Deals with sculpture in broad sense (medals, altars, for instance, are included). Index by artist, subject, title, gives location of the original. Emphasis is on post-1900 Europe, but covers the entire world. Provides a description, including medium used, and also lists works containing reproductions.
